SUMMARY:1984 Anti-Sikh Pogroms (Sikh)
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of three days\, 8\,000 – 17\,000 Sikhs were killed and about 50\,000 were displaced after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was killed by her two Sikh bodyguards on October 31\, 1984. Upon public knowledge of her death\, Indian citizens (primarily Hindu nationalists) determinedly murdered\, raped\, burned\, and tortured innocent Sikhs in more than 100 cities in 18 states across India. . Government officials in Delhi handed out weapons and even fuel and ordered residents to attack and kill Sikhs. Even police and army personnel stepped aside letting mobs run wild beating and burning Sikhs alive in the streets. The Indian government has yet to recognize these events as state sanctioned killing and genocide. After decades of advocacy and pursuit of justice\, one then member of the Indian government\, Sajjan Kumar\, was sentenced for his role in these crimes against humanity. These recent assaults on the community have shocked and greatly impacted the collective conscience. \nMore Information:\nPublications\nIndia: No Justice for 1984 Anti-Sikh Bloodshed\n \nStudents and/or Co-Workers may visit their local Gurdwara at some point during the day

SUMMARY:Martydom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji (Sikh)
DESCRIPTION:Guru Arjan Dev was the fifth Sikh Guru and the first Sikh martyr who gave the ultimate sacrifice standing for freedom. In 1606\, the Mughal Emperor\, Jahangir\, ordered that Guru Arjan Dev be tortured and sentenced to death after he refused to renounce his faith. He fearless shared the message of Oneness of all Creation as revealed by Guru Nanak. During Guru Arjan’s leadership\, thousands began adopting the path of spirituality following the lifestyle and principles of Sikhi\, which threatened the Mughal Empire. By compiling the Adi Granth\, Guru Arjan Dev created open access to religion which also led to increased rivalries and jealousy. In late May of 1606\, Guru Arjan Dev was arrested and tortured for five days. He sacrificed his life for the freedom of religion and planted the seed of giving your own life to protect humanity. \nMore Information \nStudents and/Co-Workers may visit their local Gurdwara at some point during the day

SUMMARY:Battle of Amritsar (Sikh)
DESCRIPTION:The Prime Minister of India\, Indira Gandhi\, ordered a military assault of one of the most significant and historic sites\, the Harminder Sahib (Golden Temple). Prior to the attacks\, the Indian military deployed 100\,000 troops across Punjab. This Indian military operation attacked innocent civilians who had gathered at the Harminder Sahib complex to commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev in the early days of June. All communications and phone lines were disabled\, roads were blocked\, and journalists were not allowed to be present in Punjab. Hundreds of bullet holes were counted on the various buildings in the complex and eyewitness accounts witnessed the deaths of nearly 8\,000 while the official government record is less than 500. During this attack\, many historic records and manuscripts were destroyed\, the library was burned down\, and the complex was looted. This military operation is more widely known as Operation Bluestar. Within the next decade\, more than 70\,000 Sikhs were detained were terrorism charges and hardly one percent of those were eventually convicted of a crime. \nMore Information:\n8 Invasions of Siri Harmandir Sahib\nJune 1984\nJune 1984 Ghallughara Lies List Light \nStudents and/Co-Workers may visit their local Gurdwara at some point during the day

SUMMARY:Martydom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji (Sikh)
DESCRIPTION:The ninth Guru\, Guru Tegh Bahadur\, made the ultimate sacrifice to defend the freedom of religion. The geo-political conditions under the Mughal Emperor\, Aurangzeb\, allowed for forceful conversion of religion. Many innocents were exploited and killed for refusing to convert to Islam. They were denied a fundamental human right. A group of Hindu pundits were being religiously persecuted and approached Guru Tegh Bahadur for assistance. They had been given two options: convert to Islam or be killed. Guru Tegh Bahadur heard their pleas and told the pundits to let the Emperor know that he could convert him\, he could convert them all. Soon after\, he set off to Delhi. He was asked to convert to Islam\, perform a miracle\, or face death. The other Sikhs were also executed in an effort to waiver Guru Tegh Bahadur’s commitment and faith. Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded in a public square in broad daylight under the allegations of preventing the spread of Islam in the Indian subcontinent. Guru Bahadur chose to sacrifice his life and demonstrated the level of deep moral commitment that Sikhs have to be the shield for all of humanity and defend the basic\, fundamental human rights. \nMore Information \nStudents and/or Co-Workers may visit their local Gurdwara at some point during the day
